Outdoor recreation is a broad concept that encompasses a varying range of activities and landscapes. Creating a solid foundation is key to overall success, no matter what program you are in. From the program’s start, you will be immersed in courses such as Outdoor Leadership and Living Skills, Teaching and Facilitation and Business Administration. These courses will develop your knowledge in business fundamentals and outdoor recreation, and prepare you for upper level classes and subsequent careers. Ensure advocates and proponents of the U.S. outdoor recreation economy continue to be recognized.
Great resources to find spots for camping and other recreation include Recreation.gov or the National Park Service website. You can also try the Find a Park site or search for your county or state government to be directed to a website where you can learn more about local parks. The U.S. outdoor recreation economy supports about 5.2 million jobs, generates nearly $788 billion in consumer spending and accounts for 2.1 percent of GDP.
Field experiences are in integral part of the Outdoor Recreation Management program and include local field trips, outdoor certifications, and domestic and international extended expeditions. The National Park Hospitality Association is the national trade association of the businesses that provide lodging, food services, gifts and souvenirs, equipment rentals, transportation and other visitor services in the National Park System. Concessioners have played an important role in creating lasting national park memories for more than 125 years. Concessioners operate in more than 100 national park units with combined sales exceeding $1.4 billion annually and $112 million+ in franchise fees paid to the National Park Service each year.
As part of your liberal arts education, you’ll also have the ability to further customize your learning experience with classes that spark your personal interest. You can take courses in Environmental Ethics, Wilderness Literature or even History of Wilderness and the American Mind. Hiking, mountain biking as well as camping sites are all just steps from your residence hall.
When people mention canyoning they are typically referring to descents that involve rope work, down-climbing, or jumps that are technical in nature. Canyoning is frequently done in remote and rugged settings and often requires navigational, route-finding and other wilderness skills. The activity of mountain biking involves steering a mountain cycle over rocky tracks and around boulder-strewn paths. To tackle the trails, the requirements are physical strength, stamina and a strong mountain cycle. Mountain bikes or ATBs (all-terrain bikes) feature a rugged frame and fork. Their frames are often built of aluminum so they are lightweight and stiff, making them efficient to ride.
